MANGA MONDAY!

Manga or Japanese comics, is one of the greatest things to ever happen to the American comic market since the advent of Super-Heroes. While we know a lot of our customers only truck with the 'Merican made books we all know and love, Manga offers a VAST array of subject matter, genres, art/writing styles and situations that appeal to age groups from wee little ones to grumpy old people! Even the most jaded comic book reader will find something new and exciting in the world of MANGA!!

This week we're taking a look at one of the greatest cyberpunk comics to ever come out of Japan--APPLESEED by Manga-ka Shirow Masamune! Before creating Ghost in the Shell, Shirow told the adventures of a young girl and her cyborg boyfriend as they fight cyber crime on the futuristic streets of Olympus as part of the elite ESWAT unit. Infused with Shirow's trademark future tech, political machinations and tongue n cheek humor, this is an absolutely essential book for lovers of sci-fi awesomeness everywhere!

APPLESEED TP VOL 1-4

(W/A) Shirow Masamune

You can't have a perfect society without perfect people, and the only perfect people are the ones you can manufacture. The governing body of Olympus, an urban utopia created from the ashes of World War III, is about to bring paradise crashing down around their ears as they seek to regulate the minds and bodies of the human race . . . or fully replace them with cyborg substitutes. Deunan and Briareos, still new to the city, find themselves in the unlikely position of having to hold together this house of cards. Their strategy? Destroy the old foundation and pray everything stands while new underpinnings are forged!

From the imagination of Ghost in the Shell creator Shirow Masamune comes the manga masterpiece Appleseed, an epic cyberpunk vision deftly balancing hardcore techno-science, wry political commentary, and explosive action. A visionary work that inspired the wildly popular animated film, Appleseed is now presented for the first time in America in right-to-left reading format, as originally published in Japan.

GRAPHIC NOVEL SPOTLIGHT!!

Let's face it, the world of comic books or "Graphic Novels" as they are referred to currently, is overwhelmingly impenetrable for a lot of people these days. The sheer volume of new titles that ship each week make it hard to remember previously published books or even something that came out last Wednesday, but have no fear, Zanadu is here to help you discover what you didn't know you needed in your collection! We have thousands of titles available, but these are a few of our favorite forgotten gems kicking around the store.

And please don't ever hesitate to ask for recommendations or hazy recollections regarding books you might have missed while shopping at the store. Your friendly neighborhood comic monkeys are here to help! Remember, there is a comic for literally everyone on the planet--it's just a matter of unearthing it!

SHOPLIFTER HC

(W/A/CA) Michael Cho

//Published by Pantheon Books//
Corinna Park used to have big plans. In college, she imagined writing a best-selling novel and leading the idealized life of an author. After graduation, she moved to a big city and took a job at an advertising agency - just to pay off her student loans. Now she's worked in the same office for five years and the only thing she's written is copy. She feels numbed by the monotony of a life experienced through a series of screens. But whenever she shoplifts a magazine from the corner store near her apartment, she feels a little more alive. Yet Corinna knows there must be something more to life, and she faces the same question as does everyone of her generation: how to find it?

GOFUNDME UPDATE!

Forty-two years is no joke. Grinding it out, day after day, eight hours at a time doing anything is hard--but it's doubly difficult when you're talking comics. Glamorous though it may seem from the outside, the true life of a comic retailer is a never ending evolution of reinvention that few have the constitution to withstand. Just take a look at how few comic shops there are now compared to fifteen years ago. Hell, ten years ago! This is not a forgiving business, and, as a retailer, we bear the brunt of the risk when it comes to stocking publisher's products. Guessing at what will sell, figuring out how to market that which doesn't, gambling with thousands of dollars a month…this life is not for everybody, but for those able to roll with the punches, a successful comic shop is like the home away from home every geek wishes they could build.

As a special treat, we've unearthed some rare artifacts of days past from the dusty attic of Zanadu that reveals just a bit of our long and storied history here in Seattle.

Thank you so much to everyone who has been a part of the Zanadu family over the years, we would not have survived without your dedication and support!

HOMETOWN HEROES OF ZANADU! A SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL COMIX!

Here at Zanadu, we believe that Independent comics are the backbone of the comic book industry. Since 1975, Zanadu has provided a stage upon which the burgeoning local talent can perform through our consignment program and today our local and indy section is larger than ever. In fact, it may very well be the largest local comix section in the city, but hey, who's counting? All we know is that comic creators need all the help they can get because let's face it, they spend countless hours toiling in the darkness to bring forth some soul tormenting story that dwells within them for absolutely zero money and usually little to no acclaim, but where would the industry be today if not for the tireless efforts of the visionary creators who braved the hellish onslaught of personal and professional struggle? So get in on the ground floor of the next big thing in comics or just sample the local flavor, there is always something unique to find on the racks of Zanadu.

This week we feature two books by local writer/artist/tattoo artist, Wil Spaedt!

KONG THE KING HC

(W/A/CA) Osvaldo Medina

//Published by Kingpin Books//
Filming on a remote virgin island leads to the discovery of a mysterious native with a heart as large as his body. Taken willingly to the Big City, he'll soon find out there's a thin line between the fame and glory he's been promised and the show business circus he's been thrown into. In spite of the obvious nod, Kong the King couldn't be further from a simple revisitation of the cult-classic film. It's a whole new animal, a twisted roller coaster of emotional depth. This fast-paced tour-de-force with no single word, like a silent movie from the glamorous 1920s.
