VERTIGO QUARTERLY #1: CYAN

(W/A) Various

The four colors that are the basis of comics coloring serve as the jumping-off point for creators to push the boundaries of short graphic fiction in the new VERTIGO QUARTERLY: CMYK series. Starting with stunningly simple, bold covers, CMYK will defy all conventions of traditional comics anthologies. The unifying color could suggest a mood, a plot point, a coloring technique - limited only by the imagination of the fantastic creators we've lined up. And starting with CYAN, we have tales by some of the best talents in comics - a who's who of creative minds. Jock, Fabio Moon, James Tynion IV, Robert Rodi, Shaun Simon, Amy Chu, Joe Keatinge, Cris Peter, Tony Akins and more will take on the challenge of telling compelling stories that scream cool 'blue.' VERTIGO QUARTERLY: CMYK will continue through 2014 with MAGENTA in summer, YELLOW in fall and finally BLACK in winter. Be prepared to see color as only Vertigo can deliver!

When I look at a comic, the first aspect that hits me is the color. More so than the pencils, inks or writing, it is the color that translates the mood and true feel of the comic so that I may fully immerse myself in the world I am about to enter. So when I heard Vertigo was doing a series of anthologies based on color as a theme, my interest was immediately piqued and after seeing the massive amount of talent roped into this I am hopeful that this will be a return to form for Vertigo after what has seemed like a lackluster couple of years.

SOUTHERN BASTARDS #1

(W) Jason Aaron (A) Jason Latour

It's "exactly the kind of pulp goodness I live for" according to bestselling writer Ed Brubaker and it has bestselling writer Matt Fraction "both terrified and homesick."

Welcome to Craw County, Alabama, home of Boss BBQ, the state champion Runnin' Rebs football team...and more bastards than you've ever seen. When you're an angry old man like Earl Tubb, the only way to survive a place like this...is to carry a really big stick.
From the acclaimed team of JASON AARON and JASON LATOUR, the same bastards who brought you Scalped and Wolverine: Japan's Most Wanted, comes a southern fried crime series that's like the Dukes of Hazzard meets the Coen Brothers...on meth.

"You need Southern Bastards. Jason Aaron is back to southern-fried grit and Jaston Latour is showing he's one of the best cartoonists of our generation." -Rick Remender

"The gushing about Southern Bastards is completely on point. Jason Aaron nails it (as usual), but Jason Latour is the rocketship here." -Jonathan Hickman

BACK ISSUE OF THE DAY!!

SPIDER-MAN: LIFELINE #1-3 ($2.99 ea)

(W) Fabian Nicieza (A) Steve Rude

This three-issue limited series from writer “Fabulous” Fabian Nicieza (Gambit) and artist Steve “The Dude” Rude (Nexus) focuses on the recently recovered fragments of the Lifeline Tablet, an ancient artifact that holds the key to the lost languages and medicinal practices of pre-Sumerian civilizations. It may also be a source of rebirth and unmitigated power…which makes the acquisition of the pieces a pretty popular idea with the New York underworld and Dr. Curt Connors, the long-suffering scientist who turns into the Lizard, one of Spider-Man’s oldest and deadliest foes. This is a solid Silver Age-style tale starring Marvel’s wondrous web-slinger, and it’s given a cool, retro feel with Rude’s gorgeous artwork, which truly captures the spirit of the Ditko and Romita years on The Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1).
