BOXERS AND SAINTS GN

(W/A) Gene Luen Yang

In two volumes, Boxers & Saints tells two parallel stories. Boxers follows Little Bao, whose village is plundered by Western missionaries. Inspired by visions of the Chinese gods, he joins a violent uprising against the Western interlopers. In Saints, Yang lays out the opposite side of the conflict. A girl whose village has no place for her is taken in by Christian missionaries and finds a home with them. As the Boxer Rebellion gains momentum, Vibiana must choose between her country and her faith. Boxers & Saints offers a penetrating insight into not only one of the most controversial episodes of modern Chinese history, but into the very core of our human nature.

DEATH OF HAGGARD WEST

(W/A) Paul Pope

This one-shot comic reprises scenes from the beginning of Battling Boy by Paul Pope. It presents the death of Haggard West, a vigilante-style superhero who protected the monster-ridden world of Arcolpolis before Battling Boy arrived to rid the planet of monster once and for all. The Death of Haggard West is a 32-page one-shot limited edition pamphlet comic with exclusive material (illustration and original cover) from Battling Boy author-illustrator Paul Pope.

You've heard about it, seen pieces of it on the internet, had friends who bought original art from it, but now, finally, you can read Paul Pope's newest masterpiece, BATTLING BOY!! Ok, well, maybe this is only the first chapter, but it'll give you a taste at just how fun and energetic Pope's new book turned out! I was fortunate enough to read the book in its entirety and honestly I was a little skeptical at first. Pope's been working on this for so damn long that I'm expecting every panel to look like the Sistine Chapel, but what he delivers is a quick, dirty and nasty style that evokes his earlier, inkier work, with a mad cap energy that reminds me of Corey Lewis' turbo-charged comix. Pope has delivered an American Manga complete with coming of age demigod dilemmas that will punch the FUN back into funnybooks!! (oh yeah, and magic t-shirts)
