BATTLING BOY TP/HC

(W/A) Paul Pope

The new graphic novel from award-winning creator Paul Pope! When Battling Boy's father, a warrior god, drops him on a world infested with bloodthirsty monsters, he leaves his son with nothing but a magic credit card, a trunk full of enchanted tee shirts, and instructions not to come home until he's liberated the planet from its plague of monsters. It's one kid vs an entire world full of monsters. And the monsters don't stand a chance.

You've seen pages from it, heard other creators talk about it online, but for all of those a bit further down the ladder, Paul Pope's highly anticipated new work is finally here!! Going into reading this, I had a preconceived notion as to what it was going to be, what I wanted it to be, but as usual Pope gives you what you need not what you want and Battling Boy is the result. A perfect manga influenced coming of age story on a cosmic scale that pits a young demigod against a town full of predatory pedophiles in different colored KKK hoods with nothing but his wits and a trunk of magical t-shirts at his disposal!

DEATH OF HAGGARD WEST

(W/A) Paul Pope

This one-shot comic reprises scenes from the beginning of Battling Boy by Paul Pope. It presents the death of Haggard West, a vigilante-style superhero who protected the monster-ridden world of Arcolpolis before Battling Boy arrived to rid the planet of monster once and for all. The Death of Haggard West is a 32-page one-shot limited edition pamphlet comic with exclusive material (illustration and original cover) from Battling Boy author-illustrator Paul Pope.

You've heard about it, seen pieces of it on the internet, had friends who bought original art from it, but now, finally, you can read Paul Pope's newest masterpiece, BATTLING BOY!! Ok, well, maybe this is only the first chapter, but it'll give you a taste at just how fun and energetic Pope's new book turned out! I was fortunate enough to read the book in its entirety and honestly I was a little skeptical at first. Pope's been working on this for so damn long that I'm expecting every panel to look like the Sistine Chapel, but what he delivers is a quick, dirty and nasty style that evokes his earlier, inkier work, with a mad cap energy that reminds me of Corey Lewis' turbo-charged comix. Pope has delivered an American Manga complete with coming of age demigod dilemmas that will punch the FUN back into funnybooks!! (oh yeah, and magic t-shirts)
